.NET v1.1 and the SID

19 12 2006

It must be me, I’m thick and can’t see for looking, but am I really really to believe there isn’t any way to retrieve a Users SID using .NET framework v1.1.

I know I could write some MC++/Win32 API code to do this (take a username/domain, get the SID) but WTF, this isn’t natively available in the BCL????

Please please someone, open my eyes, tell me I’m wrong .

Specifically, I want to retrieve the calling users SID from within a ServicedComponent, damned if I can find a native way of doing it.

Lost on Sky TV a bit Lost?

18 12 2006

I’ve think it may quite possibly be me but, couple of weeks ago we see an episode (can’t remember the name) in which Mr Eko is not seen, but Charlie did make reference to Mr Ecko being duffed up by the black smoke, this was the episode that Locke saves Mr Eko from the polar bear and returns him unconscious to camp.

At the time I thought it was pretty odd cause I hadn’t missed any episodes, anyway last weeks episode see’s Mr Eko back in camp and going with Charlie, Sayid and Locke to the second hatch. While the others go inside, Mr Eko remains outside and is duely beaten up by the smoke and dies.

Either this a episode scheduling error by Sky, or it’s (gasp) a continuity error by the program makers.

Anyway, damn them for rushing out the first few episodes of season 3, only to make me wait for “long time” for the rest!!!

UK ID Card Fraud Pt III

18 12 2006

Continuing in my series of unhappy melodramas concerning UK ID Cards/ePassports….

This week comes another tale of ePassport shenanigans, the full story can be found here.

It’s a pretty good read, and in this case by good I mean, a damning and inciteful analysis by a Mr Christian Böttger on the failings of the system, which I’ve moaned about previously and can’t bring myself to continue doing – it’s way to annoying.

In any case I’m just in the process of working up my juices to start ranting about the “…if you’ve nothing to hide you’ve nothing to fear…” brigade.

Gordon Brown’s PBR gets Smarter on IR35

14 12 2006

In Gordon Brown’s pre budget report last week there was some interesting information on likely changes to the IR35 legislation.

And it seems they’ve finally worked out the group of people they want to catch, which is people who work through limited companies for a single employer, who enjoy permanent status, perks, benefits and so on.

Typically these are individuals who work through so called composite companies; employed by the limited company, and are shareholders but who don’t hold executive status, I.e. not a Director.

“From April 2007, draft legislation will strip away the unfair competitive advantage for hundreds of thousands of contractors who today use managed service or composite companies.”

Unlike limited company owners, these workers are “not in business on their own…and the underlying nature of the contracts…is one of employment”, the government decided yesterday.

From what my accountant says, they’ve had help drafting up this legislation from actual honest to goodness accountants, KPMG no less, whi’ve looked at the market and drafted legislation accordingly.

If this does end up becoming law, I’m going to have to kick myself for saying it, but “well done Gordon”

Custom Google Toolbar Buttons

13 12 2006

Today saw me giving custom google toolbar buttons a stab, in this case I figured I’d write a button to go to and search Google Docs & Spreadsheets.

The API documentation is available here. [http://www.google.com/tools/toolbar/buttons/apis/howto_guide.html]

There’s nothing particularly taxing about it, the XML for my button can be seen below, the only difficult bit was getting the base64 encoding of my image.  I didn’t see it in the documentation, but the type attribute of the <icon> element can be any valid mime-type, here I’ve chosen image/gif, but you could use jpg, icon, png etc.The <search> element allows you to create a custom search tool, if you select some text in your browser and right click, your button appears in the “More Search Types…” context menu.

<?xml version=”1.0″?>
